December 8, 2023

OLYMPIA, Washington – Each year the Washington Public Ports Association (WPPA) recognizes members of the port community for a lifetime of service at the association’s Annual Meeting in December. WPPA is pleased to recognize Michael Fredrickson and Bob McChesney for their dedicated service and recognize them as 2023 Life Members.

Mike Frederickson, Port of Walla Walla

After 18 years as a Commissioner with the Port of Walla Walla, Mike Frederickson is set to retire at the end of 2023. He has been involved with countless economic development projects and other initiatives across Walla Walla County that provide long-term benefits and quality of life for residents. Commissioner Frederickson has also been an active WPPA member and vocal supporter of the association, including providing leadership in association assets and finances and participation in various committee assignments during his tenure.

“Mike is a champion for his community and the success of the Port of Walla Walla and the port industry within the state,” said Port Executive Director Patrick Reay. “As the Port is celebrating its 70th anniversary, Mike has been an elected official for 25% of our organization’s existence. Prior to the 18 years of service as a Port Commission, he served as a County Planning Commissioner for six years. This represents 24 years of direct service and involvement in the development success of Walla Walla County.”

Bob McChesney, Port of Edmonds

Bob McChesney retired in May after more than 40 years in the Washington maritime industry, including 14 years as executive director for the Port of Edmonds. McChesney started his maritime career right out of college, working in the steamship industry at multiple Puget Sound ports. After returning to college to earn his master’s degree from the University of Washington School of Marine Affairs, McChesney began working for the Port of Longview’s executive director. He then became director of property and development at the Port of Everett, executive director for the Port of Port Angeles, and finally executive director for Edmonds until his retirement this spring. His career included multiple projects, initiatives, and accomplishments that supported his communities and the port industry. McChesney was an active WPPA member, including serving as chair of the Trade and Economic Development Committee.

“In every role he served within the port industry, Bob showed leadership, dedication, and intention,” said Port of Edmonds Executive Director Angela Harris. “He touched many lives through his work and is known for his humor, specifically his quippy one-liners, and his sincere demeanor. His contributions to WPPA and his impact on the port industry make him a Life Member.”

As a state legislative and regulatory advocacy organization, the Washington Public Ports Association (WPPA) fosters public policy for ports to achieve their goals. The WPPA was formed by the Legislature in 1961 to represent public port districts throughout Washington, serving as the focus through which ports work cooperatively to develop policy direction, share information, and address issues on economic development, trade, transportation, and environmental stewardship. Public port districts offer a wide range of locally governed services, including marine terminals, barge facilities, industrial development, marinas, airports, railroads, and tourism promotion.
