Environmental Impact Statement on the removal of the Snake River dams released today

Today in important news for Washington ports, agencies that operate the Federal Columbia River Power System released a long-awaited Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), developed under an order from a Federal District judge in Portland. The EIS highlights the importance of dams on Snake River to provide reliable, carbon free electricity to people in the Pacific Northwest.

Removing the Snake River dams would more than double the region’s risk of power shortages, produce an additional 1.3 MMT of climate-altering CO2 annually and eliminate carbon-efficient transportation of agricultural products to market.  The EIS selects a “preferred alternative” that provides for salmon restoration in the Columbia Basin and allows modified river system operations to continue.
